Duas for anxiety and worry

The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught duas for worry and distress that Muslims have recited for centuries. Here are duas from the Qur’an and Sunnah for anxious moments, each with its source.

Qalbi is a spiritual companion, not medical care. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, please call your local emergency number right away (112 in Europe, 911 in the US) or a crisis line in your country.

A dua for worry, grief and debt

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from weakness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by others.

Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 6369

A dua to lift sadness

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is done, Your decree for me is just. I ask You by every name that is Yours, by which You named Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept hidden in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Qur’an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sadness and the release of my worry.

Remembrance in distress

There is no god but Allah, the Magnificent, the Forbearing; Lord of the mighty Throne, Lord of the heavens and earth, and Lord of the noble Throne.

Source: Sahih al-Bukhari, Fath al-Bari 7/154; Sahih Muslim, 4/2092

Protection from wrongdoing

My Lord, save me from people who do wrong.

Source: Qur’an 28:21 (supplication or remembrance excerpt)

A receptive heart and beneficial knowledge

O Allah, protect me from knowledge that brings no benefit, a heart without humility, a self that is never satisfied, and a supplication that goes unanswered.

Source: Sahih Muslim 2722 (supplication or remembrance excerpt)

Suffice me against them as You will

O Allah, protect me from them in whatever way You will.

Source: Sahih Muslim 3005 (supplication or remembrance excerpt)

You are the All-Knowing, the Wise

Glory be to You. We know only what You have taught us. You are the All-Knowing, the Wise.

Source: Qur’an 2:32 (supplication or remembrance excerpt)

Keep us from wrongdoing

Our Lord, do not place us among people who do wrong.
